The Lazy Indian

The Lazy Indian

“India is my country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters.”

Lies. Pathetic, unpractical, routine lies. The above stated lines have been reiterated for years now by the young minds of our nation. The hailed India, with all the so-called development, is reaching an international standard they say. International standard of what? Of raping fellow citizens brutally to quench a sudden outburst of lust? It is mentally agonizing to even picture what happened to the helpless girl who was gang raped in Delhi. This need not awaken the existing socio-cultural barriers or the political influence that exists radically within our country. The sheer reason being, it simply won’t. Countless outrageous cases have been registered and can any one of us clearly mention an action taken so severe that it could threat the very motive of the crime creators, which will scare them away from repeating any of such inhuman acts? No, I tell you.

We keep high standards of culture. We mock western lifestyle. We hail our traditions of “protecting” girls. My question is- Are we so dumb that whatever happening before our eyes we neglect and still embrace the old, rotten cultural chains that haunt our present? Culture is the way of behavior influenced by others in your society. If a single person protests, he is tabooed from the same. And if it is a “she”, mind it, her life is going to be a living hell made so by the wonderfully conservative socio-cultural norms waiting to tie her to the ground.

We call our country our motherland. We call it Bharat Mata. We sing Vande Mataram (Bow to Mother). It is with such pity and sorrows that I would put down all these by saying that we are indeed mocking our nation. If there is some culture left within us, it’s time we revoked it and put into practical, sensible and above all, humane use. Each and every rape occurrence is a throw of mud on our motherland. How lazy can we be to sit and watch our mother being raped again, again and again? With the weapon of power, money and culture-lessness , our people kill her and destroy the safety feeling among the other beings existing here.

Maybe it’s the optimistic feeling of “nothing will happen to me” that stagnates your thoughts and actions against it. India, I call on to the people themselves, are you so lethargic that you cannot resist the comfort zones to save your motherland from being unsocial and incriminating? If you sit there, knowing no way to save yourself from the mass of trouble that you and your fellow citizens are going through, what are you? A mass of molecules with a programmed brain to follow societal norms and be a slave to the wizened rules of conservatism? If you cannot look at a fellow female as a sister, or at least as a friend, what will you be? A fearsome hooligan waiting to tear her up with a chance? I ask myself these questions every time such an incident occurs. What am I doing? I’m an Indian, and in my veins run the same blood that runs in any one of you. India, the only call now is to agitate. To agitate against inhumanity and blood shed and aged conventions. Isn’t it time to reassure quality and equality? Isn’t the clock ticking to start some organized movement against the pitiful deeds our fellow Indians are committing? My morality is questioned. And so is yours. Kindly know, once you are in that exploited person’s shoes, the world around you will mind their own life with maybe a Facebook share that would give no result whatsoever.

This is not an instruction. This is a revelation to myself. A stinging thought that should hurt and motivate every one of us to act wisely for the greater good. I do not have suggestions. I have no conclusions. The only thing I have for you is a request. To be a better citizen, a better human, a better you. With inter related teamwork and vision; India can refine itself to be a mother’s lap for its children- Safe, Calm and Loved. Vande Mataram.
